Two worlds, one conversation
Iris makes communication natural between Deaf and hearing people.
Hearing person speaks
Iris captures speech and converts it to clear, readable text — while a signing avatar translates the words into ASL in real-time, so the Deaf person can read or watch.
Deaf person responds
The Deaf person types their response, which appears as text for the hearing person to read. Quick phrase buttons make common responses instant.
Coming soon: Sign directly to the camera for automatic ASL-to-English translation — as text or spoken audio.
Both understand each other
Private, real-time, no interpreter needed. The conversation flows naturally on a single device — at a doctor's office, a store, a classroom, anywhere.
Iris is a communication tool designed to bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing communities. It is not a replacement for professional ASL interpreters in critical or legal settings. Sign language is nuanced and culturally rich — Iris aims to grow alongside the Deaf community's feedback, not to replace the expertise of human interpreters.

Frequently asked questions
What is Iris?
Iris is a real-time ASL-English translation tool that bridges the gap between Deaf and hearing communities. When a hearing person speaks, Iris converts their words to readable text and displays them alongside a signing avatar that performs ASL — so the Deaf person can read or watch the signs. The Deaf person types responses using text input or quick phrase buttons. In a future update, Deaf users will also be able to sign directly to the camera for automatic ASL-to-English translation as text or spoken audio. All core processing happens on your device by default — no internet required during conversations.
Is Iris free?
Yes. Iris offers a free tier with core features including real-time speech-to-text, basic dictionary access, and up to 5 conversations per day. Paid plans unlock unlimited use, full dictionary, learning tools, and more.
Does Iris store my conversations?
By default, all processing happens on your device. Audio and video never leave your phone. You can optionally enable cloud sync for conversation history, but it is off by default.
Is Iris accessible?
Yes. Iris is built to WCAG 2.2 AA standards with features like adjustable text size, high contrast mode, reduced motion support, full keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility.
What sign languages does Iris support?
Currently Iris supports American Sign Language (ASL) with a growing sign dictionary. Support for additional sign languages is planned for future releases.
Do I need an internet connection?
Iris is designed to work primarily on-device. Speech-to-text, the signing avatar, and the ASL dictionary all function without an internet connection once the app is loaded. An internet connection is needed only for initial sign-in and downloading updates. Your conversations never require a server.
